The Link Between Snow and Water Damage in Chicago

We have already seen multiple snowstorms in the Chicago area and according to local meteorologists these storms are only the beginning. Some are predicting as much as 28 to 35 inches of snowfall in Chicago, with as much as 50 inches in northern and western counties. So, needless to say, the storms we’ve had recently are just the tip of the iceberg. And while snow is not a direct threat to your home (most of the time), it can increase the risk of water damage.

The Link between Snow and Water Damage in Chicago

Ice Dams

One of the biggest risks snow poses to your home is in the form of ice dams.

When the snow on your roof begins to melt, it works its way down your roof to your gutters. Unfortunately, if your gutters are clogged, or if the edge of your roof is much colder than the middle, the once-melted snow can freeze, forming an ice dam and preventing water from properly draining off your roof. With nowhere else to go, water will begin to collect at the dam and eventually back up under your shingles and into your home.

Melting Snow

When large accumulations of snow melt very quickly, the water has to go somewhere. Unfortunately, this somewhere is sometimes your home.

Preventing Winter Water Damage after a Snowstorm
Homeowners can take simple steps to avoid water damage and expensive repairs:
Remove large accumulations of snow from areas where it could melt and find its way into your home. The primary areas of concern are basement windows and doors. However, cracks in your foundation can also be a possible entryway for melting snow.
Remove snow from ground drains and gutters to allow for proper drainage.
When shoveling snow, consider which way it will drain when it melts.
NEVER climb a ladder to remove snow from your roof. If you see snow melting and falling off your roof, this is probably a good sign that ice dams have not formed.
If water does find its way into your home, act fast
